The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. He must become greater; I must become less.
- John 3:29-30
John the Baptist demonstrates perfectly what it means to find our satisfaction and pleasure in Christ and how we can glorify Him through our actions. After making the way for Christ to enter this world, he is joyful that Jesus came to baptize through the Holy Spirit. John is in no way upset or disappointed that Jesus has come. Like the friend of the bridegroom, he awaits the day when the groom is ready to marry and in the meantime prepares all that he can for glorious entry. When Jesus entered, he proclaims that like the bridegroom's friend, that joy was his, knowing that Christ has come to fulfill the prophecies made. It is now complete. With Christ in the world, John knows that Christ must increase, and he must decrease. This act of humility epitomizes what it means to take pleasure in God. He is so great that we can only look on in amazement and humble ourselves even more because we want Him to do a good work in our lives. John the Baptist did a lot in his lifetime, but he didn't accomplish any of it by himself. All that he worked towards was to ultimately give back glory to God.
- John 3:21
By believing in Christ, we live in the true light, the light that reveals our weaknesses and magnifies God's strengths. When we act upon what God has given us, we and others can see that what we have done has been done through God. It is nothing of our own power or strength, but by God's will that we are able to do the things we do. Our hearts fill with joy to see Christ glorified through our actions because not only are we receiving goodness from the Father that comes with serving His people, but we acknowledge that He is sovereign over our lives and give that glory to Him. Because without Him, none of the changes we see when we start to follow Christ would ever manifest.
